The
course and its history
This superb
Georgian building has just recently been refurbished inside
and out. The course - which was modelled by the 1910 St. Andrews
Open winner James Braid is overlooked by the hotel. Braid
himself is regarded as a world wide course creator and was
at the forefront of course architects and playing ability
in the early 1900s.
Braid's challenge was to transform a unique
blend of exposed coastline and lush tree lined parkland into
a course that would challenge every hickory shaped club. Like
all good seaside course designers Braid made use of the strong
easterly wind which can cause even the best players a headache.
The wind hits your drive on 5, 10, and 15 from the right and
on the 13 and 17 head on. With a strong wind behind you on
11 and 14 it makes club selection a nightmare, these holes
made Braid both a genius and a demon.
